How we identify you

Why we need to check your identity

When you want to open an account with us, we need to make sure that you are who you say you are. This is to protect you from criminals who might try to use your identity without you knowing.

How we check your identity

We use Equifax to verify your identity. Equifax is one of the main credit reporting agencies in the UK.
If we can't verify your identity digitally, you won’t be able to open a cahoot account. If this happens, see our points below to find out what you need to do next.

What to do if we’re not able to verify your identity

You’ll need to make sure that all your personal details are correct, including your address, name and telephone number.

  • Your name needs to be the same as it appears on your personal identification (ID). This is your legal name. Equifax won’t be able to verify your identity if you type in a shortened version of your name, for example ‘Bob Smith’ instead of ‘Robert Smith’.
  • If you’ve recently moved, Equifax may not have your up-to-date address yet. However, we’ll need you to apply with your current address. To check, get in touch with Equifax to see which address they hold for you. You can also ask for a copy of your report online at equifax.co.uk. There may be a fee for this service.

After you’ve checked you’ve entered your details correctly, you can reapply on the cahoot website.

What to do if you’ve checked your details, but we still can’t verify your identity

  • You’ll need to contact Equifax directly. This is to check that the information they hold for you is correct.
  • You can ask for a copy of your report online at equifax.co.uk. There may be a fee for this service.
  • Once Equifax confirms that your details are correct, you can reapply for an account with us.
  • If Equifax still can’t verify your identity, please get in touch with us.
